What to Do in a Dental Emergency
When a dental emergency happens, taking the right steps before you reach our office can help minimize damage and improve treatment outcomes. Here’s what to do in common dental emergencies:
Severe Toothache
- Rinse the mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any debris.
- Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause irritation.
- Call us immediately if the pain is persistent or severe.
Knocked-Out Tooth
- Pick up the tooth by the crown, avoiding the root.
- If possible, place it back in the socket and hold it there.
- If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth in a container of milk or saliva.
- Seek emergency dental care within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
- Rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area.
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Save any broken pieces and bring them to our office.
Dental Abscess or Swelling
- Rinse with a warm saltwater solution to help reduce bacteria.
- Avoid pressing on the swollen area.
- Seek immediate treatment, as infections can spread quickly.
Lost Filling or Crown
- Try to keep the exposed tooth clean.
- If possible, temporarily place the crown back using dental cement (available at most pharmacies).
- Call us as soon as possible for a permanent solution.
